Squares are easy. Trim is the job

Field siding is a simple area calculation. What people underestimate is J-channel, corner posts and starter — driven by how many openings the wall has, not how big it is.

Total wall length is the perimeter you are siding. Gable triangles are entered separately since they are not part of the rectangle.

Each opening drives J-channel around its full perimeter — that is the line that scales with opening count, not wall size.

Corners & edges

Corner posts come in 10 ft sticks and are not cut short — a 9 ft wall still takes a full post per corner.

        The field is the easy part

        Wall area minus openings, plus waste, divided by 100. Vinyl is boxed in two-square units, so the box count is simply half the squares rounded up.

        What actually catches people out is everything that is not field siding.

        Trim scales with openings, not walls

        J-channel runs the full perimeter of every window and door, plus every line where siding meets a soffit, roofline or vertical trim. A single 3½ × 4½ ft window needs about 16 lf on its own. Eight windows and two doors is well over 150 lf before a single wall edge is counted.

        That is why two houses with identical wall area can need very different trim orders, and why a per-square rule of thumb underestimates a house with a lot of glass.

        Exposure

        Exposure is how much of each panel shows once the next course laps over it. A double 4 panel shows 8″ per course, a double 5 shows 10″. It does not change the square footage, but it sets how many courses a wall takes and therefore how much nailing there is.

        Hang it loose

        Vinyl expands and contracts substantially with temperature — a 12 ft panel can move over half an inch between a January morning and a July afternoon.

        So it is hung, not fastened. Nails go in the centre of the slot, driven until there is about a sixteenth of clearance under the head, and the panel is left able to slide. End gaps at trim are left deliberately, larger when installing in cold weather.

        Nailed tight, it buckles in summer heat and can split at the fastener in winter cold. This is the single most common vinyl siding failure and it is entirely an installation issue.

        Questions

        How much waste?

        Ten percent on a plain wall, fifteen on a normal house, twenty where there are many openings, gables or direction changes.

        Why a full corner post on a 9 ft wall?

        Because posts come in 10 ft lengths and joining them mid-wall is visible. One post per corner is the practical order.

        Can I side over old siding?

        Over flat, sound, dry wall sheathing with furring where needed, yes. Over anything uneven, no — vinyl telegraphs every bump underneath it, and it is unforgiving in raking light.

        Quantity takeoff only. Vinyl siding must be hung loose to move with temperature — nails centred in the slot, not driven tight, and end gaps left at the trim. Fastening it solid causes buckling in summer and splitting in winter. Follow the manufacturer instructions and local wind requirements.
